The Texas Legislative session meets every other year and in January 2021, members of the Texas Senate and Texas House will convene for the 87th Legislative Session. Constitutionally, the only thing that the Texas Legislature is required to do is to pass a state budget – of which education is historically the largest line item. In the 2019 session, over $62 billion dollars was appropriated to education! With COVID-19, economic uncertainty, changing demographics, and continued inequities in public education, this next session will have a lot to contend with.
With over 4,500 members in the TFA network, we will be hosting monthly briefings to talk about all things Texas legislature. We will cover the basics of how the Texas Legislature works, how to find and follow bills, what the hot topics are, and answer questions you might have. Regardless of how familiar you are with the process, there will be lots to learn and takeaway from these sessions. If you’re interested in learning more about the legislative process, looking to learn about ways you can get involved, or want to know what TFA is prioritizing during session, join us! Each briefing will provide an update on topline happenings as well as topics that our alumni care most about.
