Austin Is Home to the Texas Education Agency

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) oversees the state’s primary and secondary public education system. The state agency has more than 800 employees. Several are TFA alums, including two deputy commissioners (Lily Laux and Megan Aghazadian).

The City Has a Thriving Nonprofit Community

Many alumni also work in educational nonprofits in Austin, advocating for education policy changes at Empower Schools, Raise Your Hand Texas, the Texas School Boards Association, and the Texas Charter Schools Association.

Technology Has a Major Presence in Austin

In recent years, Austin has attracted every major tech company and hosts campuses for Apple, Dell, Samsung, Google, Facebook, Indeed, and Oracle. Teach For America alumni are integrating education and tech at companies such as Austin Coding Academy, EVERFI, and GLG (Gerson Lehrman Group).

Certification & Training

To teach in Texas, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. As well, you’ll need to complete an approved Educator Preparation Program. Finally, to teach in the state you’ll need to certification exams, have a background check, and submit an application.
